Urban Trees
I became interested in the place of street trees in urban environments when I had been studying a number of cityscape paintings, and realised that trees were absent, or very minimized in relation to the buildings.
I looked at the surroundings to the trees – constant light and noise, small holes to fit their roots in, things hanging from them and nailed onto them, and decided to paint some paintings from the point of view of the trees.
We get so much from urban trees, they give us shade, they are beautiful and provide habitats for insects and birds. I wanted to capture the importance of trees round us, how much they mean within a cityscape.
